Food & Diet
We are committed to educating our yoga community about taking 100% responsibility in food choices.  We place particular emphasis on creating resources for finding humanely raised animal products, vegetarian foods and vegan foods in Tucson.

Vegan websites:

  • Everyday Dish - A great online vegan cooking channel
  • VegGuide.org - An excellent site for finding restaurants in Tucson with vegan-friendly options.
  • HappyCow.net - Great site with reviews & ratings of vegan-friendly dining in Tucson.
  • The Vegan Chef - Great vegan recipes by Chef Beverly Lynn Bennett.
  • VegWeb.com - More vegan recipes lots of information about the vegan diet.
  • VeganFood - Recipes galore.
  • Vegan Health - Well-researched health information about going vegan.
  • Vegan Outreach -  A highly recommended charity doing very important work for farm animals - difficult work that needs to be done - please support them!
Humane Animal Products:
  • Tucson CSA - A wonderful source for locally-grown food and humanely raised animal products.  Subscriptions and over-the-counter purchases available (open Tuesdays & Fridays 4-7 only).  Many Tucson Yogis are involved with Tucson CSA.
  • Tucson's Farmers Markets - The local farmer's markets are your best bet for humanely produced eggs, cheese & meat
  • St. Phillips Farmer's Market - The largest farmers market with several resources for animal products.
  • Food Conspiracy Co-op - Our neighborhood grocery store on North 4th Ave. offers grass-fed beef, lamb and goat from 47 Ranch (Sky Island Brand) and Raw cow milk from Save Your Dairy.
  • Whole Foods Market:
Whole Foods Market, has excellent animal welfare standards for its scale (local is always better).  The CEO of Whole Foods is vegan and he takes responsibility for what his store sells.  Excellent brands are Stonyfield Farms, Cowgirl Creamery (cheese), and Straus Family Creamery (butter, milk, cream).
  • Baja Arizona Meat listing - Southern AZ meat producers
  • Baja Arizona Dairy listing - Southern AZ dairy producers
  • Baja Arizona Egg listing - Southern AZ egg producers
  • About Labeling: When in doubt, eat beef over chicken, goat products over cow products, and buy from smaller brands and smaller farms.  Look for the words "pasture-raised" "pasture-fed" "grass-fed."  Beware of egg labeling - chickens suffer some of the worst conditions in the industry, and regulation is virtually nonexistent for "cage-free" and "free range".   The best bet is to know your egg farmer or have lots of trust in your vendor.
  • Eating Out: When eating out, avoid animal products.  We are still hoping to see a new Tucson restaurant that uses animal products from 100% humane sources.  Please let us know of anything new.
